To the R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Family,
After a year of uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus, R.M. Pyles Boys Camp was very much looking forward to returning to a new normal this summer. The coronavirus, however, was not the only crisis we faced last year. In the fall of 2020, the Castle Fire burned through the Golden Trout Wilderness and Giant Sequoia National Monument, leaving hazardous conditions in its wake. While the buildings at Pyles were spared, much of the surrounding area was not. To provide for public safety, the U.S. Forest Service has issued a Forest Closure Order, which contains Pyles Camp and the surrounding area in the Lloyd Meadow Basin, including the road leading to camp.
Due to this closure order, we are unable to bring campers up to Lloyd Meadows until the area is deemed safe, which could take several months. Considering this announcement, Pyles has moved forward with an alternative program schedule for summer 2021.
First Year Campers (June 28-July 9):
Pyles has partnered with UCLA UniCamp to utilize their beautiful Camp River Glen facility as our program host for 1st year campers. We will be hosting 1 session for first year campers, taking place from June 28-July 9 in Barton Flats, CA. Their facility reminds us of Pyles Camp and will allow us to execute a successful Pyles program for brand new campers.
Lioneers and Voyagers:
Upon the completion of our first-year camper session, we will be offering 2 sessions for former campers. These programs will enter the backcountry at Mineral King and utilize Lion Meadows as a base camp. Lioneers and Voyagers will operate July 19-30, and an additional Lioneer session will operate August 2-13.
Other Opportunities:
During the Lioneer and Voyager Sessions, we will also be offering Professional Development and community building opportunities for Counselors, Specialists, and Workers. We will be offering classic training such as PLTs, as well as going on some backpacking trips that many Pyles staff have not been on before. PLTs will be offered July 19-30, a Worker Backpacking Trip will be offered August 2-13, and several other special trips are being considered.

Sincerely,
The R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Staff
